Observation Narrative
Plot location: On south side of the Pocaty River, ca. 0.1 miles ENE of Blackwater Road Bridge.
Medium-age, second-growth swamp forest characterized by a mixture of Taxodium distichum, Nyssa spp., and Fraxinus pennsylvanica. The absence of Saurus cernuus from this seasonally flooded habitat is surprising, although its frequent associate Peltandra virginica is abundant. An interesting, anomalous feature of the composition was the occurrence of two robust Boehmeria cylindrica individuals growing in a bark crevice on Nyssa biflora approximately 7.0 meters above the ground.
[GPF note: wind tidal flooding appears to be frequent].
